Well, that was a mess. I tried the pump at full power mode to fill the basket, but prsssure reached Nearly 13 bar! Thre was a lot of channelling, So I’m guessing the drop to 8 bar for the bre phase caused the puck to expand and lose integrity. It could have been my puck prep, but I feel that was OK. I might adjust the grind size slightly coarser and lengthen the shot to 36 grams to help reduce the chances.
The shot was not nice and I should have binned it, but somehow I didn’t.
They say you learn from you failures, so this was good exprience.
Other things of note: The new PID settings seem to help holding the rigth tempertaure at the start. The Thermal Feed Forward value (Kff) seems a bit agressive as the temperature went1.4 degrees too high at about 20s. Will try and tone it down. The time to hit temp for steaming was also much quicker.
The fazenda from CherryDog was really nice, so thought I would try Sarnies. This is Natural proces and smells a little yeasty, so I wonder how that will come out once it’s been intensified in an espresso shot.
It’s quite brittle and shatters into many pieces which suggests a coarser grind due to the fines. It might also need a profile that doesn’t run too fast and cause the fines to migrate. Lets see. I’ll run it in the MHW3-Bomber 18g 58mm basket with paper.
I have noticed that I prefer shots to be bitter if they fail, so maybe start on the finer side (say 1.3.0) andd work coarser from there.
