The only change I made here was to tweak the grinder default setting (I hadn’t changed the grinder). It would default to 7 even though it was actually 7.2. I had been changing it either per session in the current shot or the visualizer.

So this test lined up with my theory - SAVING a preset ruins the next coffee (at least). I don’t know why, only that I’ve seen a pattern.

I have noticed that saving the preset after changing the grinder setting makes the machine show the purple ring differently… it does a double fade plus a flash. A re-save or a switch to another profile only does the double fade.
